Firesafe Council September Update

There is a lot going on in the fire world nationally, statewide, and locally here in Oak Park.

This month, the Lahaina, Hawaii tragedy reminded us again of wildfire’s devastating impact. While we pray for the residents of Lahaina, for many of us their plight brought back memories of the Woolsey fire that impacted so many homes and lives in Oak Park and surrounding communities in 2018.

Fortunately, at the California state level, there is more money being put into fire protection and resiliency than ever before Many of the agencies we work with have additional resources to help us, and the state and corporate donors are also providing money in the form of grants to non-profits such as the Oak Park Fire Safe Council (OPFSC).

OPFSC has been busy with that grant money this month. In July we finished construction of our website (opfsc.org), and now we are beginning to leverage it as we reach out to the community and connect homeowners with program information and agency partner resources.

This month we achieved the following:

  • Secured collateral material for events (business cards, banners, tablecloth, and pop-up)
  • Performed, along with partners, more than 10 free home wildfire assessments. (The number of these is ramping up each month. CLICK HERE for a free Home Wildfire Assessment)
  • Spoke at, and had a booth at an event sponsored by the Triunfo Water District
  • Met with multiple HOAs to present and discuss the Firewise program
  • Attended and manned a booth at the Firewise Town Hall August 17, sponsored by the Ventura County Fire Department
  • Prepared for the third-annual Oak Park Wildfire Town Hall at the Community Center on September 6 at 6 pm

The town hall will be an exciting event that will update Oak Park residents on the current fire situation in our area, new and upcoming fire-related regulations, a detailed presentation of the Firewise program that improves the fire resiliency of our homes, and an overview of the resources that we make available to Oak Park residents. The fire department and other partners will be speaking.

No registration is required, and all are welcome.
