PRESS RELEASE
RANCHO SIMI RECREATION AND PARK DISTRICT
FIRST PHASE OF MEDEA CREEK MAINTENANCE PROJECT COMMENCES
The Rancho Simi Recreation and Park District (RSRPD) is pleased to announce that the first phase of the Medea Creek Maintenance Project is now underway. This fire-resiliency project includes the removal of invasive vegetation, deadwood, and accumulated debris across approximately 285,000 square feet of open space in the lower portion of Medea Creek — an area located within 100 feet of residential homes. The project area is situated south of Kanan Road, near Oak Hills Drive and Oak Park High School.
To conduct this work, RSRPD obtained a Lake and Streambed Alteration (LSA) Agreement from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW). Project activities will be monitored by RSRPD’s environmental consultant Envicom, to ensure compliance with the LSA Agreement. This opening phase of work will commence the week of March 2nd and continue over the coming months.
In February, RSRPD awarded a $150,000 public-bid contract to SGD Enterprises, DBA Four Seasons Landscaping, to complete the work. This phase is funded by a Wildfire Protection and Resiliency Grant from the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy (SMMC). RSRPD extends its appreciation to the SMMC and the Oak Park community for their continued support. “I am so pleased we are starting the maintenance of the Medea and Lindero Creek projects. Our RSRPD staff has worked tirelessly over the last few years to secure over $3 million in grant money, as well as coordinating with a multitude of agencies that help oversee these natural stream beds. We also look forward to working with our community partners in creating a long-term plan to help with the management of the Open Spaces in and around the community of Oak Park”, Board Member Eric Lundstrom stated.
In January, CDFW approved an amendment to the LSA Agreement to include areas of Medea Creek and Lindero Creek located in the Oak Park community. Other phases of the project are planned for later this year and will continue into the following years.
This District appreciates the community’s patience and understanding while this project is underway. For more information, please contact the Rancho Simi Recreation and Park District at (805) 584-4474 or email jennifers@rsrpd.us.
