In this year-end edition of the Oak Park Fire Safe Council newsletter, we thought it would be helpful for one of our very own OPFSC board members to share his first-hand experience with his homeowner’s insurance.
The insurance company provided his family with a checklist of “fire resilient” items that would qualify for a discount, once implemented. We were very pleased to see that once they communicated to the insurance company that they had completed 8 of these 10 items, the cost of their insurance was reduced accordingly, providing a 5% discount!
Although each insurance company will treat the discounts differently, there are a couple of things worth noting in this example:
- The insurance company is required to provide a discount for living in a Firewise Community
- Almost all of the discounted items are captured in the Free Home Wildfire Assessments, which are available to all Oak Park residents at Home Assessment Request Form – Oak Park Fire Safe Council. Please sign up for your assessment today.
