Oak Park Fire Safe Council October 2024 Update

This month our focus is the October 5th Open House at Firestation #36 from 11-3pm.
Here are our major activities and accomplishments in September:

Firewise

  • Vents have been ordered pursuant to Canyon Cove’s $1,500 grant for dryer vent replacement.
  • Country Meadows HOA had Blaze Blockers do a presentation of ways to protect their homes, and also demonstrate how to use the fire extinguishers that each of the homeowners received with the grant from Ventura Regional Fire Safe Council.  A number of homeowners have signed up to have Blaze Blockers install new fireproof vents on their homes.
  • Regency Chambord has received their Firewise USA certification.  Congratulations to Bob Cavaglieri and the team that put the application together
  • Morrison Sutton has submitted their final Firewise application package to National Fire Protection Association.  We should hear within a couple of weeks if they are certified.
  • Another HOA, Tract 3141, is now going through the Firewise process and should be able to submit its application by the end of September, along with the Mae Boyer East community.
  • We’ve sent out October 1 Firewise Investment reports to all seven existing and pending Firewise communities.

Assessments

  • 6 Home Wildfire Assessments were performed in August.

Marketing

  • We are working with Fire Station 36 and the county supervisor’s office to host an open house at the fire station October 5th. This would be a family event similar to last year’s successful event, which several hundred people attended. This exciting event has already been approved by Ventura County Fire and the supervisor’s office, and we are working on logistics. Some of the fun things that will be happening are:
    – Fire trucks for kids to sit in and fire hats to wear
    – Goats (many of you have seen them on local hillsides mitigating brush). Yes, the kids can pet them.
     – Ice Cream Truck
     – Several agencies and organizations will be in attendance for those who want to discuss improved fire resiliency, insurance benefits, etc.
  • We sent out the October newsletter.
  • Communications is transitioning to Lori Gunn of the OPFSC Board.  Doug Wilson and Lori met with Peter Fehler of PMF Consulting Group to discuss a go forward plan for marketing and communications.

Fundraising and Grants

  • We received a small $2,500 grant from Ventura Regional Fire Safe Council for work performed building Firewise communities.

Operations

  • OPFSC met with Rancho Simi Recreation and Park District on 10/1/2024 to discuss the new Lindero and Medea Creek grant.  The next step will be a meeting between Ventura County RCD, OPFSC, and Rancho Simi Recreation and Parks Department to lay determine the initial steps for the project.

Volunteer

  • We want to welcome Bob Cavaglieri to our Board.  Bob is a great addition with lengthy experience in a Southern California Fire Department, multiple years as a member of his HOA Board, and the Community Firewise leader for Chambord Regency.
  • Please reach out to info@opfsc.org if you are interested in being a member of our board, as we are looking for one more member.
