A Few Of Our Many Volunteer Opportunities
The Oak Park Fire Safe Council (OPFSC) is a 501(c)(3) Tax Exempt organization that depends upon volunteers to accomplish our mission.
Created in December 2021 by six Oak Park members who were motivated by the Woolsey Fire, we have accomplished a lot since them. However, to accomplish our objective of being a Firewise Community, many more volunteers are required annually, focused on fire prevention and protection.
There are many skill sets that can be useful in our mission to protect our community, families and property from wildfire, including, among others:
- Resident Structural Work – Whether you are a homeowner or a renter, you may spend hours preparing and protecting your home from fire. CLICK HERE to see examples of activities that qualify as Firewise activities.
- Resident Yard Work – Hours that a homeowner or renter spends improving their yard against fire. CLICK HERE to see examples of activities that qualify as Firewise activities.
- Home Assessor – For HIZ Assessments – CLICK HERE to see our HIZ page that helps our homeowners identify areas where they can better protect their home and family. We work with partner agencies to do assessments, and are in the process of training additional Oak Park residents to help.
- Community Team Leader – Neighborhood and HOA leaders will interface between their group and OPFSC. Our programs will need to be communicated to the local organizations, and we need regular feedback from those organizations. This position is very important to our success!
- Community Events Participant – These can include organizing the annual OPFSC Townhall, school speaking events for students or parents, organizing Chipper Days, attendance generation through handing out flyers and brochures, manning a table at local events, and other related activities.
- Communications Personnel – If you have writing skills you can help us write or edit newspaper and newsletter articles, as well as help with content writing for collateral pieces that are required. We can also use photographers in support of these articles.
- Fundraiser – In addition to soliciting donations from homeowners and businesses, grant writing is critical to our funding. We have found that many grants are simple to apply for, but some of the larger ones that we are beginning to apply for are more substantial and require real grant-writing knowledge.
- IT Assistant – We have a GoDaddy website and use a number of tools and plug-ins. We could really use someone that is comfortable giving us a couple of hours per month managing this website. Additionally, we are starting the process of running social media campaigns, using Next Door, Facebook, Instagram, etc. If you have these skills, we could use you.
- Board Member Activities – There is a significant amount of time that goes into running the OPFSC including regular board meetings and all the various activities required to run the OPFSC.
- HOA Hours – HOA Management companies spend many hours each month maintaining the common areas of the HOA. Many of these hours apply toward Firewise recognition. CLICK HERE to see examples of activities that qualify as Firewise activities.
- Watch Video – Hours spent watching fire protection-related videos on our website count as Firewise volunteer hours. These hours are captured automatically.
- Read Documents – Hours spent reading fire protection-related documents count toward Firewise volunteer hours.
